From the home of world Cup winners Spain, to the home of the defeated finalists - the FMV Tours have landed in the Netherlands where a challenge awaits those who wish to make a little history and test their skills. This is the 7th destination on our tour (and our 8th challenge) around the globe and the leagues have an interesting structure, plenty of clubs with a story to tell, and a history of producing some of the best talent in world football for themselves whilst also developing some of the greatest foreign players too!

AGOVV Apeldoorn

This is an old and proud club that is currently undergoing a period of transition as it looks to break into the top division and make some history. They last won this league back in 1959 and is their last competition win to date but that could be about to change.

With a mid-table finish as the minimum expectations there is £650k to spend on transfers and the current wages are at about 60% of the projected budget - so the finances are there to achieve this kind of finish. However the departure of last season's top scorer (Belgian winger Nacer Chadli) to new Eredivisie winners FC Twente, leaves AGOVV looking a little short of quality up front. There is quality in the nets however, as former Aston Villa and Wolves giant (6'7) keeper Stefan Postma is a handy number one. The squad itself could do with a few extra faces as it's quite small (excluding the youth players) and is suffering from a lack of cohesion - something to be looked at straight away. Could you be the catalyst for that change?

AGOVV Apeldoorn is a Dutch football club, playing in the Eerste Divisie, based in Apeldoorn (a municipality and city in the province of Gelderland, about 60 miles south east of Amsterdam, in the centre of the Netherlands. It is a regional centre and has 136,208 inhabitants).

The club was founded on 25 February 1913 as AGOSV but when the club joined the football association of Gelderland, the club had to change its name due to a clash with another club called Steeds Voorwaarts (which is what the SV stood for in AGOSV). This resulted in the name being changed to AGOVV, which then translated as Apeldoorn football club for teetotallers. The meaning of the abbreviation has since been altered and the new meaning of AGOVV now translating as Only Practising Together Brings us Further.

AGOVV has had an unstable history and became a professional league club in 1954, returning to the amateur ranks in 1971 due to financial problems. On 1 July 2003, AGOVV returned to the Dutch league, when it was re-admitted to the Eerste Divisie. In the 2003/2004 season, forward Klaas-Jan Huntelaar became top scorer of the Eerste Divisie with 26 goals.

Should this not be 2015?

Struggling already, won all pre-season games but league started and I'm 3rd bottom after 6 games. <_<

Signing players is difficult as nobody wants to join. :(

FM-V Newbie here, so excuse the n00b question, but:

How are we required to document our progress on challenges? I'm assuming something is required, but haven't seen any kind of "rules" type thread...

Anyways, I started this challenge off, and after a rocky pre-season I've played 2 league games, Drawing away to Dordrecht and then beating Go Ahead at home (Damned happy with that one!)

You can do a current game thread if you wish but all we require as evidence is screenshots of the point scoring events, league positions etc, good luck.

Excellent, thanks for the info :)

My first point for this challenge can be seen here then.

Not sure what people's difficulty in signing players is... unless they're aiming for players out of their reach? personally I've picked up a couple of excellent wingers on frees, and pulled in a couple of youngsters on loan who are also working out quite nicely.

Nice one just remember it'll make it easier for you if you can keep them all together in one thread or one thread every season.

Yes the easiest way is to either run a thread in the Current Game section of our forums or just give a list of screenshots or proof here for each year so we can check the totals and see who is leading the way.

Oh BTW Local, I'll bite - who's the avatar of this time?it another random soap actress I'll have never heard of again, or is she actually famous?

Class to see new people joining the tour and hopefully we'll have a new name winning this leg to make it more competitive!

Started fairly well, I'm happy with my dealings in the transfer market. Still leaking goals but I have a week or two to sort that out assume the transfer window is the usual, not checked actually.

I was struggling to find a stand out centre back but luckily got Willem II who sent me Bart Biemans on loan :D Got a great partnership going up front already.

The playoffs seem strange, you need to win one of four periods to gain entry to them?

Haha! I got sent Biemans by Willem II as well :D

You're right, the playoff system is very freakin' strange.

Quote

At the end of each season, the champion of the Eerste Divisie is automatically promoted to the Eredivisie. Eight other clubs (before 2005/2006: six) enter the Nacompetitie, a promotion/relegation playoff that includes the 16th- and 17th-place clubs in the Eredivisie. The following teams qualify for the Nacompetitie:

    * The club with the best record in the "first period" of the season (after 6 rounds).
    * The club with the best record in the "second period" of the season (rounds 7–12).
    * The club with the best record in the "third period" of the season (rounds 13–18).
    * The club with the best record in the "fourth period" of the season (rounds 19–24).
    * The club with the best record in the "fifth period" of the season (rounds 25–30).
    * The club with the best record in the "sixth period" of the season (rounds 31–36).
    * The two remaining spots are filled at the season's end by the highest-placed clubs that have not already earned automatic promotion or qualified for the Nacompetitie.

If the club that wins a period has qualified for the Nacompetitie by winning a previous period, its place is filled by the next-best club in that period that has not already qualified. Usually, the clubs that qualify for the Nacompetitie turn out to be the 2nd- through 9th-placed clubs in the final table. Clubs in the Nacompetitie face each other in a knock-out system with the numbers 16 and 17 of the Eredivisie for two places in next season's Eredivisie.
